The Launch of Miracle Milkookies

Several weeks ago, I decided to take a chance and launch a cookie business out of my tiny home kitchen. For those that know me, launching a business isn't out of the ordinary. It's something I've been doing my entire life. And as most conventional businesses are born, this one started from a passion of mine (baking) and a desire to fulfill a need I couldn't seem to find access to anywhere else. As they say, sometimes the best things in life happen unexpectedly.

Here's the backstory... After delivering my first child, I was having a really hard time keeping up milk supply. Apparently my tiny 5 lb 15 oz baby needed a lot more food than my body could initially produce. I was frustrated, but didn't want to switch to formula. I pressed on and incorporated pumping into the routine every hour between feedings. Slowly but surely my milk supply increased. Unfortunately, my tiny baby was still hungry ALL THE TIME and I could only pump up to 2 ounces per 45 minute sitting. Several very frustrating and tearful days later, a girlfriend texted me and said she left some lactation cookies on my doorstep. Lactation cookies? I had no clue what they were. I googled and found out that a lot of women use them to help increase milk supply. I thought, why not? So I tried one. The following morning, I began my normal pumping/feeding routine and was astonished when I produced 8 oz of milk in just 30 minutes. I was so proud of myself I thought about freezing the 8 ounces of milk and keeping it as a trophy of my accomplishment. Instead, I used the milk to feed baby Stella as I scoured the internet for ways to make these miracle cookies at home.

A quick google search revealed that lactation cookies help with milk supply because they have the following three ingredients: oats, brewers yeast and flax seed. So I thought, why not incorporate the brewers yeast and flax seed into my go-to oatmeal chocolate chip cookie recipe? I combined the two and the result was nothing short of a miracle (hence the name). Within just a short couple of days, I was producing more breastmilk while also eating cookies that tasted good (talk about a win-win). The best part is that my daughter was getting as much breastmilk as she needed, which meant that I didn't have to switch to formula. I started making these 'Miracle Milk' cookies for other breastfeeding friends and they too experienced the same incredible results. 

When I started seeing the positive affects of the Miracle Milk Cookies, I decided to post a rendition of the now 'Miracle Milkookie' recipe (linked here) to this blog. Soon after the blog post was written, I pinned it to my Pinterest page and immediately noticed that my Miracle Milk Cookie pin was garnering thousands of re-pins from mom's across the country who were experiencing the same struggles with breastfeeding. It was astounding. After receiving emails from hundreds of other moms who were finding success with the recipe, I knew I had the opportunity to turn the miracle milk cookies into a business. I decided to post a little survey to that same blog asking other moms if they would like to purchase the cookies versus making them themselves. Within minutes I was receiving hundreds of emails from women saying that would prefer to purchase the miracle cookies instead of tracking down all of the ingredients and making them at home. I already knew these cookies were an incredible opportunity to help new moms, but the idea of turning it into a business was only confirmed with the responses that came from the survey I posted. 

Miracle Milkookies was born in June of 2017, exactly 2 years after a friend dropped off that first batch of lactation cookies on my doorstep. The company is a response to the incredible feedback from moms around the country who experienced the same success I did through breastfeeding with the help of these cookies.
